Pacific Crest Trail, Western US / 21.07.2019

Hard Hiking - June 14th After 2 days and 2 nights of traveling by plane, shuttle, train, and bus from Georgia to Lone Pine, I finally found myself standing on the side of Horseshoe Meadows road just outside. With no cars, I was desperately trying to hitch a ride to the top. After a half-hour of staring at the empty pavement, a jeep followed by a car appeared in the distance. Both vehicles slowed and pulled over. I hopped into the car. My ride was a guy from LA...

Colorado, Hiking, Western US / 26.07.2016

Tuesday, July 26, 2016 The Decalibron is Mt. Democrat (14,148 ft), Mt. Cameron (14,238 ft), Mt. Lincoln (14,286 ft), and Mt Bross (14,172 ft). These four 14'ers in the Mosquito range can be climbed in a single day. I started at the Kite Lake trailhead. The road to the trailhead is bad in 2 spots, one about a mile from the parking lot and another about a quarter mile from the parking lot. For details on doing this hike I recommend using 14ers.com .     Mt. Bross closed, but that didn't stop hikers....

July 23 - 24, 2016 Mt. Holy Cross is one of 55 mountains over 14,000 feet elevation in Colorado. At 14,005 feet it ranks 53rd. To plan your trip I recommend using www.14ers.com . That site can provide better info than l can. I do recommend camping for most people because this would be a tough out and back in a day. I saw several single day hikers not yet finished at 6 pm and 7 pm and they had been hiking more or less constantly from 6 am.  They...

Ridge Lake to Snoqualmie 6 miles The rain and wind started lightly, but in very little time I had water dripping from the roof at the lower end of my tent. I woke up at 1 AM and realized that the foot of my bag was in a puddle of water. I scrunched up toward the upper end of the tent and attempted to stay dry. Water was also leaking through the seam for the rain fly door and water coated the entire inside of the fly. I need to...

Spectacle Lake to Ridge Lake 12 miles I packed early then rolled out my pad on a rock to relax while enjoying the view of Spectacle Lake and surrounding peaks. A hummingbird was sitting on a pine tree nearby. I was motionless as I attempted to see how long it would rest if undisturbed. In a flash, it was hovering about 10 inches over my chest close to my nose. In order to extend the moment, I remained motionless. It hovered seconds as it drifted closer to my nose. I...

Hiking, Pacific Crest Trail, Western US / 24.07.2015

Easily our hardest day of the trip. We started earlier than usual at 6:30 AM. I never have trouble getting ready before others and I had plenty of time for my coffee and oatmeal with blueberries. We started the day with a long switchback climb and ended the day with a hot dusty climb through fireweed and burned forest to Spectacle Lake. We didn't finish up hiking until after 7 PM. Matt and I hiked ahead at the beginning and the end of the day. We really moved...
