PCT North California, PCT Thru Hike / 20.06.2018

At mile 1477.4. Hiked 22.3 miles today. PCT hikers cross ledges blasted out of rock and stop to photograph the dramatic trail with a view, sbut they usually don’t wonder who built it or how. Today I met the person that built these trails. Ted Tobiason blasted the rock where he is seen posing. He worked for a company under contract with the Forest Service to do excavations needed for the PCT. Ted carried around a 125 lb rock drill with a 3 ft drill bit. He would drill...

At mile 1498.3. Hiked 20.9 miles today. I seem to be hungry nearly all of the time. Shortly after I eat and start hiking again I begin to feel weak and steeply. I’ll need to resupply with increased snacks to keep me going between meals Crossed Squaw Valley Creek on this footbridge. Other views of Squaw Valley Creek flowing through the canyon. View of cloud covered Mt. Shasta. It couldn’t. Be pleasant  limbing into those clouds. Views of Castle Crag. A tiger lily. People: Hiked with and passed back and forth with Rough Ridge Andy  Shortcut....

At mile 1503.2. Hiked 4.9 miles today. I crossed the Sacramento River shortly before reaching Interstate-5 where I hitched a ride to Mt Shasta.  The river just springs from the rocks not far upstream. Rivers here have a tendency of springing from rocks. Here is a trail register I signed with my Uphillhikes logo. I walked all over town shopping for resupply and feeding myself. I tried for a barber, but as I learned Bret the town barber had flexible hours. In other words if he wanted to fish or go...

At mile 1521.1. Hiked 17.9 miles today. With a heavy pack loaded with a 5 day resupply and a long climb in the heat, I decided to cut the day short and stop hiking at 4:30 PM. I also took several cooling off breaks to prevent the heat from causing problems. The steepest part of the climb over, I finally reached a small creek where I filled my water bottles and took a long recovery lunch. The day was spent climbing up and around Castle Crag. Here are some photos...

At mile 1544.3. Hiked 23.2 miles today. The trail was a series of ups and downs in the morning which did its damage early causing my legs to be sore later in the day on much easier trail. The morning is of soft light. I came to White Ridge Spring. No treatment of water here. (Anyway, I have all of the drugs needed to treat many waterborne illnesses and it’s symptoms.) It was coming straight out of the ground; cool and refreshing. Here is the trail. Can you find the little patch of...

Under At mile 1566.1. Hiked 21.8 miles today. I slept late, relaxed some and laid in my tent enjoying a bright red sunrise over Mt Shasta, while eating my triple pack of Raisins and Spice Oatmeal, 2 Strawberry frosted Pop Tarts, and cold Folgers coffee. Even after all that lounging around I was on the trail at 6:36 am and had done 10 miles by 10:10 am. The trail wound between and around mountains. With new views around every corner and new and varied wildflowers the walk was interesting....
